In March 2021, a mass shooting occurred at three spas in Atlanta, killing eight people, including six Asian women. After the shooting, numerous rallies were held under the slogan "Stop Asian Hate" to show solidarity with the Asian community.
This tragedy occurred right around the time Horikei and I founded Kabuto, and it affected me deeply. Even though racism against Asian Americans is nothing new to those who experienced it, this time it felt different. The senseless killings woke me up and motivated me to get out of my bunker and engage with the world again.
This is a picture from one of the Stop Asian Hate rallies I attended. After the crowd dispersed, I wanted to take a picture with the poster my daughter and I had designed to show that love endures and is stronger than hate.
That was my turning point and the match that started the Kabuto fire. Now I am pursuing my passion of designing cool streetwear and spreading more awareness and respect for our cultures through a shared love of art and tattoos.
